Blood test Glasgow

Our Range of Private Allergy Tests

Nadcell provides private allergy testing at our registered medical clinic in Glasgow. Our allergy blood tests measure IgE antibodies associated with allergic sensitisation to selected food and environmental allergens.

A simple blood test may be appropriate when you have recurring or unexplained symptoms that could be associated with an allergy, including skin rashes, hives, a runny nose, persistent sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, congestion or respiratory symptoms.

Glasgow allergy testing at Nadcell is available through three options:

  • A comprehensive molecular allergen profile.
  • A food-only allergy profile.
  • Individual-specific IgE allergen tests.

The appropriate option depends on your symptoms, medical history and the suspected trigger. Results must be considered alongside this information, as a blood test result alone does not always confirm a clinical allergy.

Nadcell’s service is available only to adults. We provide blood testing rather than skin-prick testing.

Allergy Testing and Food Intolerances

Food allergies and food intolerances are not the same.

A food allergy involves the immune system. Nadcell’s allergy blood tests measure specific IgE antibodies associated with allergic sensitisation to selected foods and other allergens.

A food intolerance does not usually involve the IgE allergic pathway. Symptoms are often digestive and may include bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea or difficulty digesting a particular substance.

Nadcell does not offer food-intolerance testing through this service. Our IgE allergy blood tests do not diagnose lactose intolerance or general food intolerances.

If you experience recurring digestive symptoms but do not have symptoms suggesting an allergy, speak to your GP about the most appropriate investigation. Avoid unnecessarily removing dairy products, wheat or other important foods without suitable medical or dietary guidance.

Comprehensive Allergy Test – £399

The comprehensive allergy profile may be suitable for adults experiencing multiple allergic reactions, unexplained symptoms or potential reactions involving several different foods or environmental triggers.

This molecular allergy blood test assesses IgE sensitisation across more than 300 allergens and molecular components. These include common allergens such as pollen, house dust mite, moulds, animal dander, insect venoms and a broad range of food allergens.

Testing at a molecular level can provide more detailed information about the particular allergen proteins associated with an IgE response. However, positive test results must still be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. Testing alone cannot reliably predict whether a future reaction will be mild, severe or life-threatening.

The comprehensive allergy profile may include allergens associated with:

  • Grass, weed and tree pollen.
  • House dust and dust mites.
  • Moulds and microorganisms.
  • Dog, cat, horse and other animal allergens.
  • Insect bites and venoms.
  • Common food allergies.
  • Occupational allergens.
  • Selected medicines and other materials.

Your blood sample is collected at our Glasgow clinic. Sample collection and results interpretation are included within the displayed price, with no separate blood-draw charge.

Results are normally available within three to five working days.

Food-Only Allergy Profile – £249

The food-only allergy profile is a focused IgE blood test for adults with suspected food allergies.

The profile includes total IgE and selected specific food allergens, including:

  • Cow’s milk.
  • Egg white.
  • Egg yolk.
  • Peanut.
  • Sesame seed.
  • Soya.
  • Wheat.
  • Codfish.
  • Kiwi.

Food allergies involve the immune system and may cause symptoms such as hives, itching, swelling, wheezing, vomiting or other reactions after eating a particular food. Symptoms and their timing vary, so your medical history remains an important part of interpreting the results.

A positive result or elevated level of specific IgE may indicate sensitisation to a food allergen. It does not automatically confirm that eating the food will cause a clinical reaction or indicate how severe a reaction might be.

Patients should not remove important foods or entire food groups from their diet solely because of a blood test result. Results interpretation is included to help you understand the findings and whether further medical or dietary guidance may be appropriate.

The £249 price includes blood sample collection and interpretation of results. Results are normally available within three to five working days.

Individual Allergen Testing – £52 Per Allergen

Individual allergy tests allow targeted investigation when you suspect one or a small number of specific foods, environmental allergens or other triggers.

Each individual allergen costs £52, including sample collection and interpretation of the result.

Nadcell uses specific IgE blood testing powered by Thermo Fisher Phadia technology. The full testing list includes hundreds of individual allergens across several categories.

These tests may be relevant when allergy symptoms appear around animals, at particular times of the year or within specific home or working environments.

Symptoms associated with hay fever and environmental allergies can include sneezing, a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes and nasal congestion. Asthma or breathing symptoms require appropriate medical assessment and should not be self-diagnosed from an allergy test.

Milk allergy is different from lactose intolerance. Nadcell’s specific-IgE blood tests can investigate allergic sensitisation to milk and selected milk proteins, but they do not diagnose lactose intolerance.

Results are generally available within three to four working days.

Who Should Consider Allergy Testing?

Private allergy testing may be considered by adults experiencing recurring symptoms that appear to follow exposure to a particular food, animal, pollen, dust, mould, insect venom or other suspected allergen.

Allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives or an itchy skin rash.
  • Swelling affecting the lips, face or eyes.
  • Sneezing or a persistent runny nose.
  • Itchy, red or watery eyes.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Coughing or wheezing.
  • Vomiting or other symptoms following a specific food.
  • Reactions after an insect sting.
  • Symptoms around animals, house dust or pollen.
  • Seasonal hay-fever symptoms.

These symptoms can have many possible causes. Testing should therefore be selected and interpreted in the context of your medical history rather than used as a general screening tool for every unexplained symptom.

Nadcell’s tests are available to adults and involve a blood sample rather than exposure to the suspected allergen.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Your allergy-testing appointment takes place at Nadcell Mindcare Clinic in Glasgow.

Before taking the sample, the team will confirm which test you have selected and review relevant information about your symptoms, medical history and current medication.

The appointment involves a simple blood draw performed by a trained medical professional. Depending on the selected allergy test, one or two small vials of blood may be collected.

The blood draw normally takes only a few minutes. You do not need to fast, and most patients can return to their usual routine immediately afterwards.

Do not stop antihistamines or other medication unless Nadcell or an appropriate healthcare professional has instructed you to do so. If you are unsure whether your medication could affect testing, contact the clinic before your appointment.

Once collected, the sample is sent for laboratory analysis using the relevant IgE testing platform.

When the results are ready, you will receive:

  • A written report.
  • Details of any specific IgE results.
  • An explanation of the findings.
  • Guidance about appropriate next steps.

Comprehensive and food-profile results are normally available within three to five working days. Individual allergen results are generally available within three to four working days.

A positive test result does not automatically confirm a clinical allergy. Similarly, a negative result cannot explain every possible reaction or intolerance. Further assessment or specialist care may sometimes be recommended.

Preparing for Your Allergy Blood Test

Allergy blood tests do not normally require fasting, so you can usually eat and drink as normal before attending the Glasgow clinic. Staying well hydrated may also make collecting your blood sample easier.

Do not stop taking antihistamines, prescription medication or supplements unless Nadcell or another appropriate healthcare professional has advised you to do so. Please tell the clinical team about any medication you take and ask for individual guidance if you are unsure.

For more general preparation advice, read our guide explaining what not to do before a blood test. Always follow the instructions provided specifically for your allergy test, as these take priority over general blood-testing guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Allergy Testing Glasgow

What allergy tests does Nadcell provide?

Nadcell offers three private allergy blood-testing options for adults at its Glasgow clinic:

  • A comprehensive molecular allergy profile priced at £399.
  • A food-only IgE allergy profile priced at £249.
  • Individual specific-IgE tests are priced at £52 per allergen.

The appropriate option will depend on your symptoms, possible triggers and medical history. Sample collection and interpretation of results are included in each displayed price.

Nadcell can investigate IgE sensitisation to a wide range of foods.

Common food allergens include milk and dairy proteins, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soya and sesame. Individual testing is also available for selected foods and specific allergen components.

The precise selection will depend on whether you choose the comprehensive profile, the food-only profile or individual allergen testing. The clinic can explain which option provides the most relevant coverage for your suspected triggers.

Yes. Nadcell offers individual blood testing for selected sources of animal dander and environmental allergens, including dog dander, horse dander, house dust mites, house dust, Timothy grass, silver birch and grey alder.

Testing may be worth discussing if you experience symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, wheezing or skin reactions after contact with animals or in particular environments.

Not every environmental sensitivity is caused by an IgE-mediated allergy. Your symptoms and exposure history, therefore, remain important when interpreting the results.

Individual specific-IgE testing is available for selected insect venoms, including common wasp, European hornet and yellow hornet.

Tell the clinic if you have previously experienced swelling, breathing difficulties, dizziness, collapse or another significant reaction following an insect sting.

Blood testing cannot predict the severity of a future reaction. Anyone with a history suggesting anaphylaxis may require specialist assessment and an emergency management plan.

No. Nadcell is a private Glasgow clinic, so you do not need a GP referral to book an adult allergy blood test.

You should provide accurate information about your symptoms, previous reactions, medical history and current medication. This helps the team determine which testing option may be relevant and supports the quality of the resulting interpretation.

Private allergy testing does not replace emergency treatment or specialist assessment when either is clinically required.

Specific-IgE blood tests can provide clinically useful evidence of sensitisation to selected allergens. However, no allergy test provides a complete answer when used without your symptoms and exposure history.

The quality and relevance of the result depend on selecting appropriate allergens and correctly interpreting the findings. False-positive and clinically irrelevant positive results can occur, particularly when broad testing is performed without a clear history.

Testing should therefore be used to support clinical assessment rather than as a standalone diagnosis.

Nadcell provides interpretation of results and can discuss appropriate next steps based on your findings, symptoms and medical history.

For selected patients, further allergy management or immunotherapy may be considered. Suitability depends on the allergen involved, the effect of symptoms on your quality of life and the outcome of an individual clinical assessment.

Treatment is not automatically recommended because a blood test produces a positive result, and any additional service or cost should be explained separately.

Call 999 immediately if you or another person develops difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, collapse or other symptoms of a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.

If an adrenaline auto-injector has been prescribed, use it according to the person’s emergency treatment plan and then call 999.

Do not wait for a private allergy-testing appointment during a suspected medical emergency.
