What is TES Therapy?
TES stands for Transcranial Electrical Stimulation and is a non-invasive, completely painless non-pharmaceutical stimulation of the brain through the use of very low current electrodes placed upon the head.
The electrodes pass a very low voltage current to each other though the patients head which stimulates the brain to release endorphins and serotonin. (see how it works HERE)
Studies on TES repeatedly show a significant benefit in patients with a wide range of conditions from anxiety, depression and dementia through to Parkinson’s, IBS and diabetes!

How is TES different to other brain stimulating therapies?
I don’t know about you, but I google everything. I dig into the research and find out as much as I can before I make a decision. (Want to shortcut this process? – see here for our list of resources).
If you do decide to dive into google, you will find that the use of electrical brain stimulation is not a new phenomenon, the romans even used to use electric eels to alleviate headaches!
Unfortunately, the use of electrical brain stimulation in today’s society has become associated in many people’s minds with the negative portrayal of electroshock therapy in films, but this could not be further from the truth.
TES uses a very low-level current across just 2 electrodes creating only a mild sensation for the user, it’s non-invasive and administered under expert supervision.

If you google Transcranial Electrical Stimulation, you might get a number of similar looking results. This can be quite confusing but many of these will be types of TES.
The journal of inherited metabolic disease states that “tES comprises a number of different techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), alternating current stimulation (tACS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS)” J Inherit Metab Dis. 2018;
Despite the fact that the TES therapy that we offer here at Nadcell Mindcare is relatively new to the UK, it is widely used in hospitals throughout Russia, Eastern Europe and Western Asia, with reportedly exceptional results.
So, if you do find it challenging to source additional information about TES therapy, just give us a call and we will be happy to help.
What conditions can it help with?
The principal of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation is to reset our brain to a healthier default, and as our brain controls the master switch for all our bodies functions, it’s no surprise that if poorly functioning pathways within the brain begin to realign and repair, so will our physical issues.
Whilst it might seem quite farfetched that such a simple therapy can have such a wide range of positive impacts, there have been a number of studies (click here for a list) that support the use of TES therapy for the following health issues, (please note that this list is not exhaustive):
- Pain relief (regardless of source)
- Dementia
- Parkinsons
- Narcology (including drug withdrawal and cravings)
- Cognitive impairment
- chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- dermatitis / psoriasis
- emotional-affective disorders
- gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Gastroduodenal ulcers
- Liver function
- Pancreatic function & Carbohydrate metabolism (diabetes)
- Premenstrual Syndrome
- Pregnancy and conception issues
- Fibrocystic Disease of the Breast
- Urinary Bladder Dysfunction
- Oxidative Stress
- Hypertension
- ENT pathology
- Oncology
- Endocrinology
- Sports Performance
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
How does it work?
TES Therapy “selectively activates the defence mechanisms of the brain thus increasing the ability of neural cells to produce endorphins and serotonin” 2021 TES center LTD
Whilst none of us would say no to a shot of nature’s feel-good chemicals (serotonin & endorphins), the TES therapy is not simply a way to mask pain, it’s far more than that.
In studies TES is reported to have a “homeostatic” affect, meaning that is brings the entire body back into balance.
This idea of “balance” might appear a little vague to us in the western world that are so accustomed to manmade drugs that act intentionally and artificially on single organs or disease pathologies. We are not used to the concept of therapies that support our bodies own systems to regain health as a whole organism, but maybe we should be.
Even though its benefits have the potential to be far reaching, TES is not necessarily a cure all remedy for everyone, however, it is worth finding out if TES will be especially helpful for you or if is simply the one thing that you need to add to your health regime to nudge you over that threshold from battling with stress and fatigue into mental clarity, calm and good health.
How many sessions will I need?
This will be based on your individual needs and the other therapies you undertake alongside your TES sessions.
Although TES has proven to be highly beneficial in isolation, when it is used in conjunction with other therapies, medicines and behaviours such as the Satori experience, talking therapies, healthy eating and NADcell therapy for example, the sum becomes greater than its parts.
Let me explain…
If your body has been struggling with ill health, either mental and / or physical, a handful of TES sessions will undoubtedly make you feel better, but that positive effect may start to erode as you return to the daily stresses and strains of daily life, and the impact will effectively get drowned out.
But if you start to create some space for yourself on a regular basis to design the very best internal environment for your mind and body to truly rest and repair, you’re enabling it to build resilience, to dilute your current ill health or feeling of burnout with true health, and re-build yourself into the absolute best version of you.
The fact remains however, that we are all different.
Even the same illnesses can react differently to treatment depending on the person who is experiencing it, so whilst we recommend a minimum of 5 TES sessions, preferably paired with our Satori experience, you will be fully assessed by one of our senior clinicians to ensure that we provide the very best range of treatments for your individual needs.
Is it safe?
Everything we do in life carries an amount of risk.
According to the world health organisation, even a single piece of bacon has a measurable carcinogenic effect on our bodies, but we balance that risk against the reward and quite often the bacon will win out.
Of the many clinical trials and case studies conducted for TES therapy, there have been to our knowledge, no recorded side effects. So, whilst there is no definitive proof that TES is safer than a bacon sandwich – I’d personally be willing to take the bet.
By way of further reassurance, no TES session is conducted without a full assessment by one of our senior clinicians so you can relax in the knowledge that you are in very safe hands.
